When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. These are the types of friends I feel I have. The reason I am writing on friendship is because I fear this may not be the type of person I am to my friends. I would like to believe that I am a great friend but alas I do not know. The real test of friendship can be seen as this. Can you literally do nothing with the other person and be content and happy?? Can you enjoy those moments of life that are utterly simple?? I know I have friends that pass this test for me but do I pass that test for anyone. I hope I do because if I do not than I mean nothing to everyone I know. I say this because I know that I am not a perfect friend, but none of my friends are perfect either. Yet they are still great friends. I myself do not know if anyone out there can call me a great friend. This is because I know I do things that may be hurtful to my friends. I beleive that if it's very painful for you to criticize your friends - you're safe in doing it. But if you take the slightest pleasure in it, that's the time to hold your tongue. That is a problem I feel I may have. This is one problem I know I must fix within my life before I lose someone who is important to me. We call that person who has lost his father an orphan and a widower that man who has lost his wife. But that man who has known the immense unhappiness of losing a friend, by what name do we call him?? Here every language is silent and holds its peace in impotence. This is an emotion that I must never feel. I hope that there is one person out there who considers me a great friend.

A true friend never gets in your way unless you happen to be going down. That is why one's friends are that part of the human race with which one can be human.
